What Happened to the Sony Smart Tennis Sensor?
The Sony Smart Tennis Sensor (model SSE-TN1) was a string-mount sensor released in 2015. It attached to the shaft of a racket near the strings and connected to the Sony Smart Tennis Sensor app via Bluetooth. It measured ball spin, ball speed, swing speed, sweet spot recognition, and impact count.
On September 30, 2021, Sony shut down the server infrastructure that powered the app. Without that backend, the sensor cannot authenticate, cannot record sessions, and cannot display data. The product pages on Sony’s Australia and New Zealand sites now carry a single status label: Discontinued — Currently Unavailable.
The Sony Smart Tennis Sensor is not broken. It simply has nowhere to send its data.
Why Did Sony Discontinue It?
Sony did not publish a formal reason. The most likely explanation is a combination of factors common to the 2020–2021 wave of tennis sensor discontinuations: the cost of maintaining server infrastructure for a niche product was not justified by the user base, and the market for plug-in sensors had shrunk as camera-based AI apps grew.
Sony was not alone. In the same 18-month window, Zepp Tennis took its login servers offline (2020), Babolat shut down the Play app and the POP wristband app (March–December 2021), and HEAD pulled its Zepp-based sensor app from Google Play (September 2021). The entire category effectively reset.
